O Little Town of Bethlehem

Advent: A Star Is Born

Imagine that you were able to listen for just one brief minute to the collective expression of every human fear and every human longing. Surely you would be overcome by the sound. In a world filled with conflict, and when so many human souls cry out in anger and grief can we still believe in the Christian claim that every human longing can find its fulfillment in a baby born in Bethlehem over two thousand years ago? "Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting Light; the hopes and fears of all the years, are met in thee tonight."

From Series: "Advent: A Star Is Born"

These days, Advent is a word mostly used in connection with the wreaths of evergreen branches hung on our doors, or the cheap, waxy “chocolate" found in children’s Advent calendars. The word Advent, however, tells of deep longing and anticipation for the arrival of something or someone wonderful and long expected. Each week we'll enter into that sense of longing and hope through the words of familiar Christmas songs. It's no mere coincidence that the word Advent forms the word “Adventure.” Anything might happen!
